GIS Lab

Overview
The GIS Lab is a state-of-the-art facility within the SORADI Climate Change Research Centre. It brings together spatial data, mapping technologies, and expertise to support evidence-based research and decision-making across Somaliland and the wider Horn of Africa.
Our work follows a Socio-Ecological System (SES) approach, combining qualitative methods — interviews, focus groups, and participant observation — with quantitative techniques including surveys and Geographic Information Systems. GIS is especially valuable for integrating diverse data on localised climate impacts and adaptation strategies, and for visualising complex information to support policy.
Capabilities
- Geo-spatial tools, sketch maps, and ground surveys
- Integration of diverse localized climate and environmental data
- Spatial analysis of climate impacts and adaptation strategies
- Mapping of climate-sensitive, vector-borne disease risk
- Visualisation of complex data for decision-making and policy
- Geospatial data management and quality control
Services
GIS Mapping Systems
Geo-spatial tools, sketch maps, and ground surveys to capture and analyse climate and environmental data — integrating diverse information on localised climate impacts and adaptation.
Spatial Analysis & Visualisation
Visualisation of complex spatial data to surface patterns, support decision-making, and inform policy development for climate, livelihoods, and public health.
Data & Technical Training
Technical training in GIS proficiency and data management that empowers local researchers and practitioners and strengthens regional geospatial capacity.
Research Support
The GIS Lab supports researchers and partner institutions with spatial data, analysis, and methodological guidance. Within the DVSOMA project, the lab maps climate-sensitive, vector-borne disease risks in IDP camps and surrounding communities — producing spatial evidence for targeted interventions and informed policy, while building local capacity to address climate and health challenges in Somaliland.
Training & Capacity Building
Through the Climate Change and Environmental Masters Programme with the University of Hargeisa, students gain hands-on GIS training at the SORADI GIS Lab — covering research design, field data collection, and spatial analysis, and building local expertise in geospatial methods for climate research and policy.
